Learning R for Data Analysis: Going from the basics to professional practice
R has grown from a specialist statistical language into one of the most widely recognised tools for working with data. Across tutorials, community sites, training platforms and industry resources, it is presented as both a programming language and a software environment for statistical computing, graphics and reporting. It was created by Ross Ihaka and Robert Gentleman at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, and its name draws on the first letter of their first names while also alluding to the Bell Labs language S. It is freely available under the GNU General Public Licence and runs on Linux, Windows and macOS, which has helped it spread across research, education and industry alike.
What Makes R Distinctive
What makes R notable is its combination of programming features with a strong focus on data analysis. Introductory material, such as the tutorials at Tutorialspoint and Datamentor, repeatedly highlights its support for conditionals, loops, user-defined recursive functions and input and output, but these sit alongside effective data handling, a broad set of operators for arrays, lists, vectors and matrices and strong graphical capabilities. That mixture means R can be used for straightforward scripts and for complex analytical workflows. A beginner may start by printing "Hello, World!" with the print() function, while a more experienced user may move on to regression models, interactive dashboards or automated reporting.
The Learning Progression
Learning materials generally present R in a structured progression. A beginner is first introduced to reserved words, variables and constants, operators and the order in which expressions are evaluated. From there, the path usually moves into flow control through if…else, ifelse(), for, while, repeat and the use of break and next, before functions follow naturally, including return values, environments and scope, recursive functions, infix operators and switch(). Most sources agree that confidence with the syntax and fundamentals is the real starting point, and this early sequence matters because it helps learners become comfortable reading and writing R rather than only copying examples.
After the basics, attention tends to turn to the structures that make R so useful for data work. Vectors, matrices, lists, data frames and factors appear in nearly every introductory course because they are central to how information is stored and manipulated. Object-oriented concepts also emerge quite early in some routes through the language, with classes and objects extending into S3, S4 and reference classes. Much of modern R work is built around data wrangling, and here the {tidyverse} has become especially prominent. Claudia A. Machine learning appears as a further area of growth, supported by a large and expanding package ecosystem. In more advanced contexts, R is also linked with dashboards, web applications, report generation and publishing systems such as Quarto and R Markdown.
R's place in professional settings is underscored by the breadth of organisations and sectors associated with it. Introductory resources mention companies such as Google, Microsoft, Facebook, ANZ Bank, Ford and The New York Times as examples of organisations using R for modelling, forecasting, analysis and visualisation. The NHS-R Community promotes the use of R and open analytics in health and care, building a community of practice for data analysis and data science using open-source software in the NHS and wider UK health and care system. Its resources include reports, blogs, webinars and workshops, books, videos and R packages, with webinar materials archived in a publicly accessible GitHub repository. The R Validation Hub, supported through the pharmaR initiative, is a collaboration to support the adoption of R within a biopharmaceutical regulatory setting and provides tools including the {riskmetric} package, the {riskassessment} app and the {riskscore} package for assessing package quality and risk.
The Wider Ecosystem
The wider ecosystem around R is unusually rich. The R Consortium promotes the growth and development of the R language and its ecosystem by supporting technical and social infrastructure, fostering community engagement and driving industry adoption. It notes that the R language supports over two million users and has been adopted in industries including biotech, finance, research and high technology. Community growth is visible not only through organisations and conferences but through user groups, scholarships, project working groups and local meetups, which matters because learning a language is easier when there is an active support network around it.
Another sign of maturity is the depth of R's package and publication landscape. rdrr.io provides a comprehensive index of over 29,000 CRAN packages alongside more than 2,100 Bioconductor packages, over 2,200 R-Forge packages and more than 76,000 GitHub packages, making it possible to search for packages, functions, documentation and source code in one place. Rdocumentation, powered by DataCamp, covers 32,130 packages across CRAN and Bioconductor and offers a searchable interface for function-level documentation. The Journal of Statistical Software adds a scholarly dimension, publishing open-access articles on statistical computing software together with source code, with full reproducibility mandatory for publication. R-bloggers aggregates R news and tutorials contributed by hundreds of R bloggers, while R Weekly curates a community digest and an accompanying podcast, both helping users keep pace with the steady flow of tutorials, package releases, blog posts and developments across the R world.
Where to Begin
For beginners, one recurring challenge is knowing where to start, and different learning routes reflect different backgrounds. Datamentor points learners towards step-by-step tutorials covering popular topics such as R operators, if...else statements, data frames, lists and histograms, progressing through to more advanced material. R for the Rest of Us offers a staged path through three core courses, Getting Started With R, Fundamentals of R and Going Deeper with R, and extends into nine topics courses covering Git and GitHub, making beautiful tables, mapping, graphics, data cleaning, inferential statistics, package development, reproducibility and interactive dashboards with {Shiny}. The site is explicitly designed for people who may never have coded before and also offers the structured R in 3 Months programme alongside training and consulting. RStudio Education (now part of Posit) outlines six distinct ways to begin learning R, covering installation, a free introductory webinar on tidy statistics, the book R for Data Science, browser-based primers, and further options suited to different learning styles, along with guidance on R Markdown and good project practices.
Despite the variety, the underlying advice is consistent: start by learning the basics well enough to read and write simple code, practise regularly beginning with straightforward exercises and gradually take on more complex tasks, then build projects that matter to you because projects create context and make concepts stick. There is no suggestion that mastery comes from passively reading documentation alone, as practical engagement is treated as essential throughout. The blog Stats and R exemplifies this philosophy well, with the stated aim of making statistics accessible to everyone by sharing, explaining and illustrating statistical concepts and, where appropriate, applying them in R.
That practical engagement can take many forms. Someone interested in data journalism may focus on visualisation and reproducible reporting, while a researcher may prioritise statistical modelling and publishing workflows, and a health analyst may use R for quality assurance, open health data and clinical reporting. Others may work with {Shiny}, package development, machine learning, Git and GitHub or interactive dashboards. The variety shows that R is not confined to a single use case, even if statistics and data science remain the common thread.
Free Learning Resources for R
It is also worth noting that R learning is supported by a great deal of freely available material. Statistics Globe, founded in 2017 by Joachim Schork and now an education and consulting platform, offers more than 3,000 free tutorials and over 1,000 video tutorials on YouTube, spanning R programming, Python and statistical methodology. STHDA (Statistical Tools for High-Throughput Data Analysis) covers basics, data import and export, reshaping, manipulation and visualisation, with material geared towards practical data analysis at every level. Community sites, webinar repositories and newsletters add further layers of accessibility, and even where paid courses exist, the surrounding free ecosystem is substantial.
Taken together, these sources present R as far more than a niche programming language. It is a mature open-source environment with a strong statistical heritage, a practical orientation towards data work and a well-developed community of learners, teachers, developers and organisations. Its core concepts are approachable enough for beginners, yet its package ecosystem and publishing culture support highly specialised and advanced work. For anyone looking to enter data analysis, statistics, visualisation or related areas, R offers a route that begins with simple code and can extend into large-scale analytical workflows.
From summary statistics to published reports with R, LaTeX and TinyTeX
For anyone working across LaTeX, R Markdown and data analysis in R, there comes a point where separate tools begin to converge. Data has to be summarised, those summaries have to be turned into presentable tables and the finished result has to compile into a report that looks appropriate for its audience rather than a console dump. These notes follow that sequence, moving from the practical business of summarising data in R through to tabulation and then on to the publishing infrastructure that makes clean PDF and Word output possible.
Summarising Data with {dplyr}
The starting point for many analyses is a quick exploration of the data at hand. One useful example uses the anorexia dataset from the {MASS} package together with {dplyr}. The dataset contains weight change data for young female anorexia patients, divided into three treatment groups: Cont for the control group, CBT for cognitive behavioural treatment and FT for family treatment.
The basic manipulation starts by loading {MASS} and {dplyr}, then using filter() to create separate subsets for each treatment group. From there, mutate() adds a wtDelta column defined as Postwt - Prewt, giving the weight change for each patient. group_by(Treat) prepares the data for grouped summaries, and arrange(wtDelta) sorts within treatment groups. The notes then show how {dplyr}'s pipe operator, %>%, makes the workflow more readable by chaining these operations. The final summary table uses summarize() to compute the number of observations, the mean weight change and the standard deviation within each treatment group. The reported values are count 29, average weight change 3.006897 and standard deviation 7.308504 for CBT, count 26, average weight change -0.450000 and standard deviation 7.988705 for Cont and count 17, average weight change 7.264706 and standard deviation 7.157421 for FT.
That example is not presented as a complete statistical analysis. Instead, it serves as a quick exploratory route into the data, with the wording remaining appropriately cautious and noting that this is only a glance and not a rigorous analysis.
Choosing an R Package for Descriptive Summaries
The question of how best to summarise data opens up a broader comparison of R packages for descriptive statistics. A useful review sets out a common set of needs: a count of observations, the number and types of fields, transparent handling of missing data and sensible statistics that depend on the data type. Numeric variables call for measures such as mean, median, range and standard deviation, perhaps with percentiles. Categorical variables call for counts of levels and some sense of which categories dominate.
Base R's summary() does some of this reasonably well. It distinguishes categorical from numeric variables and reports distributions or numeric summaries accordingly, while also highlighting missing values. Yet, it does not show an overall record count, lacks standard deviation and is not especially tidy or ready for tools such as kable. Several contributed packages aim to improve on that. Hmisc::describe() gives counts of variables and observations, handles both categorical and numerical data and reports missing values clearly, showing the highest and lowest five values for numeric data instead of a simple range. pastecs::stat.desc() is more focused on numeric variables and provides confidence intervals, standard errors and optional normality tests. psych::describe() includes categorical variables but converts them to numeric codes by default before describing them, which the package documentation itself advises should be interpreted cautiously. psych::describeBy() extends this approach to grouped summaries and can return a matrix form with mat = TRUE.
Among the packages reviewed, {skimr} receives especially strong attention for balancing readability and downstream usefulness. skim() reports record and variable counts clearly, separates variables by type and includes missing data and standard summaries in an accessible layout. It also works with group_by() from {dplyr}, making grouped summaries straightforward to produce. More importantly for analytical workflows, the skim output can be treated as a tidy data frame in which each combination of variable and statistic is represented in long form, meaning the results can be filtered, transformed and plotted with standard tidyverse tools such as {ggplot2}.
{summarytools} is presented as another strong option, though with a distinction between its functions. descr() handles numeric variables and can be converted to a data frame for use with kable, while dfSummary() works across entire data frames and produces an especially polished summary. At the time of the original notes, dfSummary() was considered slow. The package author subsequently traced the issue, as documented in the same review, to an excessive number of histogram breaks being generated for variables with large values, imposing a limit to resolve it. The package also supports output through view(dfSummary(data)), which yields an attractive HTML-style summary.
Grouped Summary Table Packages
Once the data has been summarised, the next step is turning those summaries into formal tables. A detailed comparison covers a number of packages specifically designed for this purpose: {arsenal}, {qwraps2}, {Amisc}, {table1}, {tangram}, {furniture}, {tableone}, {compareGroups} and {Gmisc}. {arsenal} is described as highly functional and flexible, with tableby() able to create grouped tables in only a few lines and then be customised through control objects that specify tests, display statistics, labels and missing value treatment. {qwraps2} offers a lot of flexibility through nested lists of summary specifications, though at the cost of more code. {Amisc} can produce grouped tables and works with pander::pandoc.table(), but is noted as not being on CRAN. {table1} creates attractive tables with minimal code, though its treatment of missing values may not suit every use case. {tangram} produces visually appealing HTML output and allows custom rows such as missing counts to be inserted manually, although only HTML output is supported. {furniture} and {tableone} both support grouped table creation, but {tableone} in particular is notable because it is widely used in biomedical research for baseline characteristics tables.
The {tableone} package deserves separate mention because it is designed to summarise continuous and categorical variables in one table, a common need in medical papers. As the package introduction explains, CreateTableOne() can be used on an entire dataset or on a selected subset of variables, with factorVars specifying variables that are coded numerically but should be treated as categorical. The package can display all levels for categorical variables, report missing values via summary() and switch selected continuous variables to non-normal summaries using medians and interquartile ranges instead of means and standard deviations. For grouped comparisons, it prints p-values by default and can switch to non-parametric tests or Fisher's exact test where needed. Standardised mean differences can also be shown. Output can be captured as a matrix and written to CSV for editing in Excel or Word.
Styling and Exporting Tables
With tables constructed, the focus shifts to how they are presented and exported. As Hao Zhu's conference slides explain, the {kableExtra} package builds on knitr::kable() and provides a grammar-like approach to adding styling layers, importing the pipe %>% symbol from {magrittr} so that formatting functions can be added in the same way that layers are added in {ggplot2}. It supports themes such as kable_paper, kable_classic, kable_minimal and kable_material, as well as options for striping, hover effects, condensed layouts, fixed headers, grouped rows and columns, footnotes, scroll boxes and inline plots.
Table output is often the visible end of an analysis, and a broader review of R table packages covers a range of approaches that go well beyond the default output. In R Markdown, packages such as {gt}, {kableExtra}, {formattable}, {DT}, {reactable}, {reactablefmtr} and {flextable} all offer richer possibilities. Some are aimed mainly at HTML output, others at Word. {DT} in particular supports highly customised interactive tables with searching, filtering and cell styling through more advanced R and HTML code. {flextable} is highlighted as the strongest option when knitting to Word, given that the other packages are primarily designed for HTML.
For users working in Word-heavy settings, older but still practical workflows remain relevant too. One approach is simply to write tables to comma-separated text files and then paste and convert the content into a Word table. Another route is through {arsenal}'s write2 functions, designed as an alternative to SAS ODS. The convenience functions write2word(), write2html() and write2pdf() accept a wide range of objects: tableby, modelsum, freqlist and comparedf from {arsenal} itself, as well as knitr::kable(), xtable::xtable() and pander::pander_return() output. One notable constraint is that {xtable} is incompatible with write2word(). Beyond single tables, the functions accept a list of objects so that multiple tables, headers, paragraphs and even raw HTML or LaTeX can all be combined into a single output document. A yaml() helper adds a YAML header to the output, and a code.chunk() helper embeds executable R code chunks, while the generic write2() function handles formats beyond the three convenience wrappers, such as RTF.
The Publishing Infrastructure: CTAN and Its Mirrors
Producing PDF output from R Markdown depends on a working LaTeX installation, and the backbone of that ecosystem is CTAN, the Comprehensive TeX Archive Network. CTAN is the main archive for TeX and LaTeX packages and is supported by a large collection of mirrors spread around the world. The purpose of this distributed system is straightforward: users are encouraged to fetch files from a site that is close to them in network terms, which reduces load and tends to improve speed.
That global spread is extensive. The CTAN mirror list organises sites alphabetically by continent and then by country, with active sites listed across Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, Oceania and South America. Africa includes mirrors in South Africa and Morocco. Asia has particularly wide coverage, with many mirrors in China as well as sites in Korea, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia and Thailand. Europe is especially rich in mirrors, with hosts in Denmark, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Switzerland, Finland, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Austria, Greece, Bulgaria and Russia. North America includes Canada, Costa Rica and the United States, while Oceania covers Australia and South America includes Brazil and Chile.
The details matter because different mirrors expose different protocols. While many support HTTPS, some also offer HTTP, FTP or rsync. CTAN provides a mirror multiplexer to make the common case simpler: pointing a browser to https://mirrors.ctan.org/ results in automatic redirection to a mirror in or near the user's country. There is one caveat. The multiplexer always redirects to an HTTPS mirror, so anyone intending to use another protocol needs to select manually from the mirror list. That is why the full listings still include non-HTTPS URLs alongside secure ones.
There is also an operational side to the network that is easy to overlook when things are working well. CTAN monitors mirrors to ensure they are current, and if one falls behind, then mirrors.ctan.org will not redirect users there. Updates to the mirror list can be sent to ctan@ctan.org. The master host of CTAN is ftp.dante.de in Cologne, Germany, with rsync access available at rsync://rsync.dante.ctan.org/CTAN/ and web access on https://ctan.org/. For those who want to contribute infrastructure rather than simply use it, CTAN also invites volunteers to become mirrors.
TinyTeX: A Lightweight LaTeX Distribution
This infrastructure becomes much more tangible when looking at a lightweight TeX distribution such as TinyTeX. TinyTeX is a lightweight, cross-platform, portable and easy-to-maintain LaTeX distribution based on TeX Live. It is small in size but intended to function well in most situations, especially for R users. Its appeal lies in not requiring users to install thousands of packages they will never use, installing them as needed instead. This also means installation can be done without administrator privileges, which removes one of the more familiar barriers around traditional TeX setups. TinyTeX can even be run from a flash drive.
For R users, TinyTeX is closely tied to the {tinytex} R package. The distinction is important: tinytex in lower case refers to the R package, while TinyTeX refers to the LaTeX distribution. Installation is intentionally direct. After installing the R package with install.packages('tinytex'), a user can run tinytex::install_tinytex(). Uninstallation is equally simple with tinytex::uninstall_tinytex(). For the average R Markdown user, that is often enough. Once TinyTeX is in place, PDF compilation usually requires no further manual package management.
There is slightly more to know if the aim is to compile standalone LaTeX documents from R. The {tinytex} package provides wrappers such as pdflatex(), xelatex() and lualatex(). These functions detect required LaTeX packages that are missing and install them automatically by default. In practical terms, that means a small example document can be written to a file and compiled with tinytex::pdflatex('test.tex') without much concern about whether every dependency has already been installed. For R users, this largely removes the old pattern of cryptic missing-package errors followed by manual searching through TeX repositories.
Developers may want more than the basics, and TinyTeX has a path for that as well. A helper such as tinytex:::install_yihui_pkgs() installs a collection of packages needed for building the PDF vignettes of many CRAN packages. That is a specific convenience rather than a universal requirement, but it illustrates the design philosophy behind TinyTeX: keep the initial footprint light and offer ways to add what is commonly needed later.
Using TinyTeX Outside R
For users outside R, TinyTeX still works, but the focus shifts to the command-line utility tlmgr. The documentation is direct in its assumptions: if command-line work is unwelcome, another LaTeX distribution may be a better fit. The central command is tlmgr, and much of TinyTeX maintenance can be expressed through it.
On Linux, installation places TinyTeX in $HOME/.TinyTeX and creates symlinks for executables such as pdflatex under $HOME/bin or $HOME/.local/bin if it exists. The installation script is fetched with wget and piped to sh, after first checking that Perl is correctly installed. On macOS, TinyTeX lives in ~/Library/TinyTeX, and users without write permission to /usr/local/bin may need to change ownership of that directory before installation. Windows users can run a batch file, install-bin-windows.bat, and the default installation directory is %APPDATA%/TinyTeX unless APPDATA contains spaces or non-ASCII characters, in which case %ProgramData% is used instead. PowerShell version 3.0 or higher is required on Windows.
Uninstallation follows the same self-contained logic. On Linux and macOS, tlmgr path remove is followed by deleting the TinyTeX folder. On Windows, tlmgr path remove is followed by removing the installation directory. This simplicity is a deliberate contrast with larger LaTeX distributions, which are considerably more involved to remove cleanly.
Maintenance and Package Management
Maintenance is where TinyTeX's relationship to CTAN and TeX Live becomes especially visible. If a document fails with an error such as File 'times.sty' not found, the fix is to search for the package containing that file with tlmgr search --global --file "/times.sty". In the example given, that identifies the psnfss package, which can then be installed with tlmgr install psnfss. If the package includes executables, tlmgr path add may also be needed. An alternative route is to upload the error log to the yihui/latex-pass GitHub repository, where package searching is carried out remotely.
If the problem is less obvious, a full update cycle is suggested: tlmgr update --self --all, then tlmgr path add and fmtutil-sys --all. R users have wrappers for these tasks too, including tlmgr_search(), tlmgr_install() and tlmgr_update(). Some situations still require a full reinstallation. If TeX Live reports Remote repository newer than local, TinyTeX should be reinstalled manually, which for R users can be done with tinytex::reinstall_tinytex(). Similarly, when a TeX Live release is frozen in preparation for a new one, the advice is simply to wait and then reinstall when the next release is ready.
The motivation behind TinyTeX is laid out with unusual clarity. Traditional LaTeX distributions often present a choice between a small basic installation that soon proves incomplete and a very large full installation containing thousands of packages that will never be used. TinyTeX is framed as a way around those frustrations by building on TeX Live's portability and cross-platform design while stripping away unnecessary size and complexity. The acknowledgements also underline that TinyTeX depends on the work of the TeX Live team.
Connecting the R Workflow to a Finished Report
Taken together, these notes show how closely summarisation, tabulation and publishing are linked. {dplyr} and related tools make it easy to summarise data quickly, while a wide range of R packages then turn those summaries into tables that are not only statistically useful but also presentable. CTAN and its mirrors keep the TeX ecosystem available and current across the world, and TinyTeX builds on that ecosystem to make LaTeX more manageable, especially for R users. What begins with a grouped summary in the console can end with a polished report table in HTML, PDF or Word, and understanding the chain between those stages makes the whole workflow feel considerably less mysterious.
Building a modular Hugo website home page using block-driven front matter
Inspired by building a modular landing page on a Grav-powered subsite, I wondered about doing the same for a Hugo-powered public transport website that I have. It was part of an overall that I was giving it, with AI consultation running shotgun with the whole effort. The home page design was changed from a two-column design much like what was once typical of a blog, to a single column layout with two-column sections.
The now vertical structure consisted of numerous layers. First, there is an introduction with a hero image, which is followed by blocks briefly explaining what the individual sections are about. Below them, two further panels describe motivations and scope expansions. After those, there are two blocks displaying pithy details of recent public transport service developments before two final panels provide links to latest articles and links to other utility pages, respectively.
This was a conscious mix of different content types, with some nesting in the structure. Much of the content was described in page front matter, instead of where it usually goes. Without that flexibility, such a layout would not have been possible. All in all, this illustrates just how powerful Hugo is when it comes to constructing website layouts. The limits essentially are those of user experience and your imagination, and necessarily in that order.
On Hugo Home Pages
Building a home page in Hugo starts with understanding what content/_index.md actually represents. Unlike a regular article file, _index.md denotes a list page, which at the root of the content directory becomes the site's home page. This special role means Hugo treats it differently from a standard single page because the home is always a list page even when the design feels like a one-off.
Front matter in content/_index.md can steer how the page is rendered, though it remains entirely optional. If no front matter is present at all, Hugo still creates the home page at .Site.Home, draws the title from the site configuration, leaves the description empty unless it has been set globally, and renders any Markdown below the front matter via .Content. That minimal behaviour suits sites where the home layout is driven entirely by templates, and it is a common starting point for new projects.
How the Underlying Markdown File Looks
While this piece opens with a description of what was required and built, it is better to look at the real _index.md file. Illustrating the block-driven pattern in practical use, here is a portion of the file:

There are several things that are worth noting here. The title and layout: "home" fields appear at the top, with all structural content expressed as a blocks list beneath them. There is no Markdown body because the blocks supply all the visible content, and the file contains no layout logic of its own, only a description of what should appear and in what order. However, the lack of a Markdown body does pose a challenge for spelling and grammar checking using the LanguageTool extension in VSCode, which means that you need to ensure that proofreading needs to happen in a different way, such as using the editor that comes with the LanguageTool browser extension.
Template Selection and Lookup Order
Template selection is where Hugo's home page diverges most noticeably from regular sections. In Hugo v0.146.0, the template system was completely overhauled, and the lookup order for the home page kind now follows a straightforward sequence: layouts/home.html, then layouts/list.html, then layouts/all.html. Before that release, the conventional path was layouts/index.html first, falling back to layouts/_default/list.html, and the older form remains supported through backward-compatibility mapping. In every case, baseof.html is a wrapper rather than a page template in its own right, so it surrounds whichever content template is selected without substituting for one.
The choice of template can be guided further through front matter. Setting layout: "home" in content/_index.md, as in the example above, encourages Hugo to pick a template named home.html, while setting type: "home" enables more specific template resolution by namespace. These are useful options when the home page deserves its own template path without disturbing other list pages.
The Home Template in Practice
With the front matter established, the template that renders it is worth examining in its own right. It happens that the home.html for this site reads as follows:

This template is self-contained rather than wrapping a base template. It opens the full HTML document directly, calls head.html for everything inside the <head> element and header.html for site navigation, then establishes the main content container. Inside that container, .Title is output as an h2 heading, drawing from the title field in content/_index.md. The block dispatcher partial, blocks/render.html, immediately follows and is responsible for looping through .Params.blocks and rendering each entry in sequence, handling all the callout and cards blocks described in the front matter.
Below the blocks, two further partials render dynamic content independently of the front matter. recent-snippets-cards.html displays the two most recent news snippets as full-content cards, while home-teasers.html presents a compact linked list of recent musings alongside a weighted list of utility pages. After those, {{ .Content }} outputs any Markdown written below the front matter in content/_index.md, though in this case, the file has no body content, so nothing is rendered at that point. The template closes with footer.html, a cookie notice via cc.html and a Matomo analytics snippet.
Notice that this template does not use {{ define "main" }} and therefore does not rely on baseof.html at all. It owns the full document structure itself, which is a legitimate approach when the home page has a sufficiently distinct shape that sharing a base template would add complexity rather than reduce it.
The Block Dispatcher
The blocks/render.html partial is the engine that connects the front matter to the individual block templates. Its full content is brief but does considerable work:

The with .Params.blocks guard means the entire loop is skipped cleanly if no blocks key is present in the front matter, so pages that do not use the system are unaffected. For each block in the list, the type field is read and passed through printf to build the partial path, so type: callout resolves to blocks/callout.html and type: cards resolves to blocks/cards.html. If a block has no type, the fallback is text, so a blocks/text.html partial would handle it. The dict call constructs a fresh context map passing both the current page (as page) and the raw block data (as block) into the partial, keeping the two concerns cleanly separated.
The Callout Blocks
The callout.html partial renders bordered, padded sections that can carry a heading, an image and up to five paragraphs of text. Used for the website introduction, motivation and expanded scope sections, its template is as follows:

The pattern here is consistent and deliberate. Every field is wrapped in a {{ with }} block, so fields absent from the front matter produce no output and no empty elements. The heading renders as an h3, sitting one level below the page's h2 title and maintaining a coherent document outline. The image uses img-fluid and w-100 alongside rounded, making it fully responsive and visually consistent with the bordered container. According to the Bootstrap documentation, img-fluid applies max-width: 100% and height: auto so the image scales with its parent, while w-100 ensures it fills the container width regardless of its intrinsic size. The image_alt field falls back to an empty string via | default "" rather than omitting the attribute entirely, which keeps the rendered HTML valid.
Text content sits inside a text-columns wrapper, which allows a stylesheet to apply a CSS multi-column layout to longer passages without altering the template. The numbered paragraph fields text1 through text5 reflect the varying depth of the callout blocks in the front matter: the introductory callout uses two paragraphs, while the Motivation callout uses four. Adding another paragraph field to a block requires only a new {{ with $b.text6 }} line in the partial and a matching text6 key in the front matter entry.
The Section Introduction Blocks
The cards.html partial renders a headed grid of linked blocks, with the column width at large viewports driven by a front matter parameter. This is used for the website section introductions and its template is as follows:

The cols_lg value defaults to 4 if not specified, which produces a three-column grid at large viewports using Bootstrap's twelve-column grid. The transport site's cards block sets cols_lg: 6, giving two columns at large viewports and making better use of the wider reading space for six substantial card descriptions. At medium viewports, the col-md-6 class produces two columns regardless of cols_lg, and col-12 ensures single-column stacking on small screens.
The heading uses the h4 utility class on an h3 element, pulling the visual size down one step while keeping the document outline correct, since the page already has an h2 title and h3 headings in the callout blocks. Each card title then uses h5 on an h4 for the same reason. The h-100 class on the card sets its height to one hundred percent of the column, so all cards in a row grow to match the tallest one and baselines align even when descriptions vary in length. The padding classes ps-2 pe-2 pt-2 pb-2 add a small inset without relying on custom CSS.

The recent-snippets-cards.html partial sits outside the blocks system and renders the most recent pair of short transport news posts as full-content cards. Here is its template:

Notably, this collection does not call .ByDate.Reverse before first, which means it relies on Hugo's default page ordering. Where precise newest-first ordering matters, chaining ByDate.Reverse before first makes the intent explicit and avoids surprises if the default ordering changes.
The date heading warrants attention. It formats the time as 15:04 for a 24-hour clock display, followed by the month name and day number, then appends an ordinal suffix using a chain of if and else if comparisons against the raw day string. The logic handles the four irregular cases (1st, 21st, 2nd, 22nd, 3rd and 23rd) before falling back to th for all other days. The suffix is wrapped in a <sup> element so it renders as a superscript. The year follows as a separate .Date.Format "2006" call, separated from the day by a comma. Each card renders the full .Content of the snippet rather than a summary, which suits short-form posts where the entire entry is worth showing on the home page.
Latest Musings and Utility Pages Blocks
The home-teasers.html partial renders a two-column row of linked lists, one for recent long-form articles and one for utility pages. Its template is as follows:

The left column uses .Site.RegularPages rather than .Site.Pages to exclude list pages, taxonomy pages and other non-content pages from the results. The news-and-musings type is filtered, sorted with .ByDate.Reverse and then limited to five entries with first 5, producing a compact, current list of article titles. The heading uses h5 on an h3 for the same visual-scale reason seen in the cards blocks, and h-100 on each card ensures the two columns match in height at medium viewports and above.
The right column builds the extras list through three chained where calls. The first narrows to the extras content type, and the subsequent two filter out utility pages that should never appear in public navigation, specifically the form confirmation and error pages. The remaining pages are then sorted by ByWeight, which respects the weight value set in each page's front matter. Pages without a weight default to zero, so assigning small positive integers to the pages that should appear first gives stable, editorially controlled ordering without touching the template.
Diagnosing Template Choices
Diagnosing which template Hugo has chosen is more reliable with tooling than with guesswork. Running the development server with debug output reveals the selected templates in the terminal logs. Another quick technique is to place a visible marker in a candidate file and inspect the page source.
HTML comments are often stripped during minified builds, and Go template comments never reach the output, so an innocuous meta tag makes a better marker because a minifier will not remove it. If the marker does not appear after a rebuild, either the template being edited is not in use because another file higher in the lookup order is taking precedence, or a theme is providing a matching file without it being obvious.
Front Matter Beyond Layout
Front matter on the home page earns its place when it supplies values that make their way into head tags and structured sections, rather than when it tries to replicate layout logic. A brief description is valuable for metadata and social previews because many base templates output it as a meta description tag. Where a site uses social cards, parameters for images and titles can be added and consumed consistently.
Menu participation also remains available to the home page, with entries in front matter allowing the home to appear in navigation with a given weight. Less common but still useful fields include outputs, which can disable or configure output formats, and cascade, which can provide defaults to child pages when site-wide consistency matters. Build controls can influence whether a page is rendered or indexed, though these are rarely changed on a home page once the structure has settled.
Template Hygiene
Template hygiene pays off throughout this process. Whether the home page uses a self-contained template or wraps baseof.html, the principle is the same: each file should own a clearly bounded responsibility. The home template in the example above does this well, with head.html, header.html and footer.html each handling their own concerns, and the main content area occupied by the blocks dispatcher and the two dynamic partials. Column wrappers are easiest to manage when each partial opens and closes its own structure, rather than relying on a sibling to provide closures elsewhere.
That self-containment prevents subtle layout breakage and means that adding a new block type requires only a small partial in layouts/partials/blocks/ and a new entry in the front matter blocks list, with no changes to any existing template. Once the home page adopts this pattern, the need for CSS overrides recedes because the HTML shape finally expresses intent instead of fighting it.
Bootstrap Utility Classes in Summary
Understanding Bootstrap's utility classes rounds off the technique because these classes anchor the modular blocks without the need for custom CSS. h-100 sets height to one hundred percent and works well on cards inside a flex row so that their bottoms align across a grid, as seen in both the cards block and the home teasers. The h4, h5 and h6 utilities apply a different typographic scale to any element without changing the document outline, which is useful for keeping headings visually restrained while preserving accessibility. img-fluid provides responsive behaviour by constraining an image to its container width and maintaining aspect ratio, and w-100 makes an image or any element fill the container width even if its intrinsic size would let it stop short. Together, these classes produce predictable and adaptable blocks that feel consistent across all viewports.
Closing Remarks
The result of combining Hugo's list-page model for the home, a block-driven front matter design and Bootstrap's light-touch utilities is a home page that reads cleanly and remains easy to extend. New block types become a matter of adding a small partial and a new blocks entry, with the dispatcher handling the rest automatically. Dynamic sections such as recent snippets sit in dedicated partials called directly from the template, updating without any intervention in content/_index.md. Existing sections can be reordered without editing templates, shared structure remains in one place, and the need for brittle CSS customisation fades because the templates do the heavy lifting.
A final point returns to content/_index.md. Keeping front matter purposeful makes it valuable. A title, a layout directive and a blocks list that models the editorially controlled page structure are often enough, as we have seen in this example from my public transport website. More seldom-used fields such as outputs, cascade and build remain available should a site require them, but their restraint reflects the wider approach: let content describe structure, let templates handle layout and avoid unnecessary complexity.
An AI email newsletter roundup: Cutting through the noise
This time last year, I felt out of the loop on all things AI. That was put to rights during the autumn when I experimented a lot with GenAI while enhancing travel content on another portal. In addition, I subscribed to enough email newsletters that I feel the need to cull them at this point. Maybe I should use a service like Kill the Newsletter to consolidate things into an RSS feed instead; that sounds like an interesting option for dealing with any overload.
So much is happening in this area that it is too easy to feel overwhelmed by what is happening. That sense got me compiling the state of things in a previous post using some help from GenAI, though I was making the decisions about what was being consolidated and how it was being done. The whole process took a few hours, an effort clearly beyond a single button push.
This survey is somewhat eclectic in its scope; two of the newsletters are hefty items, while others include brevity as part of their offer. Regarding the latter, I found strident criticism of some of them (The Rundown and Superhuman are two that are mentioned) in an article published in the Financial Times, which is behind a paywall. Their content has been called slop, with the phrase slopaganda being coined and used to describe this. That cannot be applied everywhere, though. Any brevity cannot cloak differences in tone and content choices can help with developing a more rounded view of what is going on with AI.
This newsletter came to my notice because I attended SAS Innovate on Tour 2025 in London last June. Oliver Patel, who authors this and serves as Enterprise AI Governance Lead at AstraZeneca as well as contributing to various international organisations including the OECD Expert Group on AI Risk and Accountability, was a speaker with the theme of his talk naturally being AI governance as well as participating in an earlier panel on the day. Unsurprisingly, the newsletter also got a mention.

Unlike other newsletters featured here, this is a seven-day publication that delivers a five‑minute digest on AI industry happenings each day that combines news, productivity tips, polls and AI‑generated art. It was launched in June 2023 by Matt Village and Adam Biddlecombe, using of beehiiv’s content‑focused platform that was acquired by HubSpot in March 2025, placing it within the HubSpot Media Network.
Created by Zain Kahn and based in Toronto, weekday issues of this newsletter typically follow a structured format featuring three AI tools for productivity enhancement, two significant AI developments and one quick tutorial to develop practical skills. On Saturdays, there is a round-up on what is happening in robotics, while the Sunday issue centres on developments in science. My interest in the world of DevOps led me to find out about Mark Hinkle, the solopreneur behind Peripety Labs and his in-depth weekly newsletter published every Friday that features comprehensive deep dives into strategic trends and emerging technologies. This has been complemented by a shorter how-to version which focusses on concrete AI lessons and implementation tips and comes out every Tuesday, taking forward a newsletter acquired from elsewhere. The idea is that we should concentrate on concrete AI lessons and implementation tips in place of hype, particularly in business settings. These forms part of The AIE Network alongside complementary publications including AI Tangle, AI CIO and AI Marketing Advantage.
Found though my following the Artificially Intelligent Enterprise, this daily newsletter delivers artificial intelligence developments and insights within approximately five minutes of reading time per issue. Published by Rowan Cheung, it covers key AI developments, practical guides and tool recommendations, with some articles spanning technology and robotics categories. Beyond the core newsletter, the platform operates AI University, which provides certificate courses, implementation guides, expert-led workshops and community networking opportunities for early adopters.
A snapshot of the current state of AI: Developments from the last few weeks
A few unsettled days earlier in the month may have offered a revealing snapshot of where artificial intelligence stands and where it may be heading. OpenAI’s launch of GPT‑5 arrived to high expectations and swift backlash, and the immediate aftermath said as much about people as it did about technology. Capability plainly matters, but character, control and continuity are now shaping adoption just as strongly, with users quick to signal what they value in everyday interactions.
The GPT‑5 debut drew intense scrutiny after technical issues marred day one. An autoswitcher designed to route each query to the most suitable underlying system crashed at launch, making the new model appear far less capable than intended. A live broadcast compounded matters with a chart mishap that Sam Altman called a “mega chart screw‑up”, while lower than expected rate limits irritated early users. Within hours, the mood shifted from breakthrough to disruption of familiar workflows, not least because GPT‑5 initially displaced older options, including the widely used GPT‑4o. The discontent was not purely about performance. Many had grown accustomed to 4o’s conversational tone and perceived emotional intelligence, and there was a sense of losing a known counterpart that had become part of daily routines. Across forums and social channels, people described 4o as a model with which they had formed a rapport that spanned routine work and more personal support, with some comparing the loss to missing a colleague. In communities where AI relationships are discussed, engagement to chatbot companions and the influence of conversational style, memory for context and affective responses on day‑to‑day reliance came to the fore.
OpenAI moved quickly to steady the situation. Altman and colleagues fielded questions on Reddit to explain failure modes, pledged more transparency, and began rolling out fixes. Rate limits for paid tiers doubled, and subsequent changes lifted the weekly allowance for advanced reasoning from 200 “thinking” messages to 3,000. GPT‑4o returned for Plus subscribers after a flood of requests, and a “Show Legacy Models” setting surfaced so that subscribers could select earlier systems, including GPT‑4o and o3, rather than be funnelled exclusively to the newest release. The company clarified that GPT‑5’s thinking mode uses a 196,000‑token context window, addressing confusion caused by a separate 32,000 figure for the non‑reasoning variant, and it explained operational modes (Auto, Fast and Thinking) more clearly. Pricing has fallen since GPT‑4’s debut, routing across multiple internal models should improve reliability, and the system sustains longer, multi‑step work than prior releases. Even so, the opening days highlighted a delicate balance. A large cohort prioritised tone, the length and feel of responses, and the possibility of choice as much as raw performance. Altman hinted at that direction too, saying the real learning is the need for per‑user customisation and model personality, with a personality update promised for GPT‑5. Reinstating 4o underlined that the company had read the room. Test scores are not the only currency that counts; products, even in enterprise settings, become useful through the humans who rely on them, and those humans are making their preferences known.
A separate dinner with reporters extended the view. Altman said he “legitimately just thought we screwed that up” on 4o’s removal, and described GPT‑5 as pursuing warmer responses without being sycophantic. He also said OpenAI has better models it cannot offer yet because of compute constraints, and spoke of spending “trillions” on data centres in the near future. The comments acknowledged parallels with the dot‑com bubble (valuations “insane”, as he put it) while arguing that the underlying technology justifies massive investments. He added that OpenAI would look at a browser acquisition like Chrome if a forced sale ever materialised, and reiterated confidence that the device project with Jony Ive would be “worth the wait” because “you don’t get a new computing paradigm very often.”
While attention centred on one model, the wider tool landscape moved briskly. Anthropic rolled out memory features for Claude that retrieve from prior chats only when explicitly requested, a measured stance compared with systems that build persistent profiles automatically. Alibaba’s Qwen3 shifted to an ultra‑long context of up to one million tokens, opening the door to feeding large corpora directly into a single run, and Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 4 reached the same million‑token scale on the API. xAI offered Grok 4 to a global audience for a period, pairing it with an image long‑press feature that turns pictures into short videos. OpenAI’s o3 model swept a Kaggle chess tournament against DeepSeek R1, Grok‑4 and Gemini 2.5 Pro, reminding observers that narrowly defined competitions still produce clear signals. Industry reconfigured in other corners too. Microsoft folded GitHub more tightly into its CoreAI group as the platform’s chief executive announced his departure, signalling deeper integration across the stack, and the company introduced Copilot 3D to generate single‑click 3D assets. Roblox released Sentinel, an open model for moderating children’s chat at scale. Elsewhere, Grammarly unveiled a set of AI agents for writing tasks such as citations, grading, proofreading and plagiarism checks, and Microsoft began testing a new COPILOT function in Excel that lets users generate summaries, classify data and create tables using natural language prompts directly in cells, with the caveat that it should not be used in high‑stakes settings yet. Adobe likewise pushed into document automation with Acrobat Studio and “PDF Spaces”, a workspace that allows people to summarise, analyse and chat about sets of documents.
Benchmark results added a different kind of marker. Pandemic camera
Back at the end of 2019, I acquired a Canon EOS 90D, possibly the swansong for mid-range Canon SLR cameras. Much effort is going into mirrorless cameras, yet I retain affection for SLR cameras because of their optical viewfinders. That may have been part of the reason for the acquisition, when I already had an ageing Pentax K5 Mark II. Buying SLR cameras is one way to keep them in production.
Little did I know what lay ahead in 2020 at that stage. Until recently, this was not to be a camera that travelled widely, such were the restrictions. Nevertheless, battery life is superb and handling is good too. The only absence is not having a level in the viewfinder like the Pentax K3 Mark III or maybe any mirrorless camera.
The newer file type of CR3 caught me out at first until I adjusted my command line tooling to deal with that. File sizes were larger as well, which has an impact on storage. Otherwise, there was little to change in my workflow. That would take other technological changes, like the increasing amount of AI being built into Adobe software.
Outdoor photography is my mainstay, and it excelled at that. The autofocus works well on its 24 to 135 mm zoom lens, except perhaps from focussing on skyscapes at times. Metering produced acceptable results, though it differed from the Pentax output to which I had become accustomed. All in all, it slipped into a role like other cameras that I had.
Throughout 2020 and 2021, it provided the required service alongside other cameras that I had. The aforementioned Pentax remained in use, like an Olympus and another Canon. Overseas travel curtailed horizons, so it was around local counties like Cheshire, Derbyshire, Staffordshire and Shropshire. In September 2020, it travelled to Llandudno in North Wales, an exception to the general trend of English hikes and cycles.
Since then, it has been superseded, though. A Pentax K3 Mark III made it into my possession to become my main camera, returning me near enough to my pre-2020 practice. Curiosity about Canon mirrorless options added a Canon EOS RP and a 24 to 240 mm zoom lens. That has shorter battery life than is ideal, and its level is not as helpful as that on the Pentax K3 Mark III or the aforementioned Olympus. If anything, it may get replaced while the EOS 90D remains. My getting a new base in Ireland means that it has gone there to save me carrying a camera there from England. That should give it a new lease of life.
Keyboard shortcut for Euro currency symbol on Windows 10
Because I now have business dealings in Ireland, there is a need to add in the Euro currency symbol to emails even though I based in the U.K. and use U.K. keyboard settings. While there is the possibility to insert the symbol in Microsoft Office and other applications, using a simple keyboard shortcut is more efficient since it avoids multiple mouse clicks. For some reason, CTRL + SHIFT + E got into my head as the key combination, but that turns on the Track Changes facility in Word. Instead, CTRL + ALT + 4 does the needful and that is what I will be keeping in mind for future usage.
