Privacy Policy
Introduction
This is a non-business website. No personal data collected here is sold, rented or used for commercial purposes. This policy explains, in plain terms, what information is collected from visitors and how it is used.
Contact
The site owner is also the data controller for the personal data described in this policy. If you have a question about your data, or want a comment or your email address removed, please use the contact form. This is the way to reach the site owner about privacy matters, so please use it directly rather than leaving a comment asking for contact details.
Information Collected from Visitors
Like most websites, this site collects some non-identifying technical information automatically, such as browser type, referring page and the date and time of a visit. This is used only to understand how the site is used, for example which pages are popular, and is never linked back to an individual.
If you leave a comment, your name, email address and IP address are recorded. Your email address is never published or shared and is used only to moderate comments and, if necessary, to contact you about them. Your IP address is recorded for the same moderation purpose and is visible only to the site owner. The lawful basis for this processing is legitimate interest, specifically to prevent spam and misuse and to keep published comments appropriate.
Analytics
This site uses Matomo to count visits and understand general traffic patterns. It is configured in line with CNIL guidance on consent-exempt audience measurement, meaning visitor data are anonymised before it is stored. This includes anonymising your IP address (the last two bytes are removed), disabling all tracking cookies, masking referrer and campaign data, and excluding personally identifiable information from what is collected. These same anonymisation principles are consistent with ICO guidance on privacy-friendly analytics. Because no cookies are set, and the data are anonymised, this analytics tracking is carried out on a consent-exempt basis, and no cookie consent banner is shown.
Cookies
This site does not use tracking or analytics cookies. One small cookie is set only if you tick the box to save your name, email and website when leaving a comment, so these details are remembered for next time you comment; this is optional and off by default, and no cookie is set unless you choose it. A separate session cookie is used for security purposes, to generate a token that protects forms (such as the contact form) against forgery; this cookie is strictly necessary for the site to function safely and does not require consent. No other cookies are used elsewhere on the site. If this changes, for example if embedded content from another site introduces a cookie, this section will be updated to describe it and, where required, a consent mechanism will be added.
How Long Information Is Kept
Comments, and the email addresses attached to them, are kept for as long as the comment remains published, unless you ask for it to be removed sooner. Anonymised analytics data are kept for 180 days, after which it is deleted automatically.
Third Parties
Personal data collected on this site is not shared with third parties, except where required by law, or where necessary to protect the rights, property or safety of the site owner, visitors or the public. This site may link to other websites; those sites have their own privacy policies, and this policy does not cover them.
Your Rights
You are entitled to ask what personal data are held about you, to ask for it to be corrected or deleted, and to withdraw any consent you have given at any time. To do so, please use the contact form above. If you are unhappy with how your data has been handled, you also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office.
Changes to This Policy
This policy may be updated occasionally to reflect changes to the site or to legal requirements. The date at the top of this page shows when it was last revised.
