I don't have time to find out if the dist-upgrade would work this time around or not. so I always do a clean install.

I always have a separate /home partition but even that can be an issue due to out of date config files.

So,

I boot from the Live CD of the new version, rename my home folder from greg to greg2 then format / ,but not /home and set up a new greg on the way. Now as I have used the same user name all the files in greg2 still have ownwership of greg. So next I setup two Nautilus windows side by side (hidden files enabled) and drag my Photos, Videos, Music and Thunderbird folders across. I also bring across Firefox favourites.

This makes a nice clean update without gotchas, even if it is a bit tedious compared to a simple upgrade. I keep greg2 for a while as there is always something in a config file that you need to grab.

cheers
